On May 22, the Port Washington Parent Resource Center’s Stepping Stones Class had a graduation party for its 11 special graduates. The Stepping Stones Class is offered to children ages 0-4 from low-income families who otherwise have limited or no access to preschool education. The class provides these children with the skills and experiences they need to succeed in kindergarten. The Stepping Stones children are exposed to music, stories, crafts, free play and gym time. They sing the alphabet and have story time during each class. The children are taught number and letter recognition and shape identification. They learn their name in print, which helps them identify their belongings. The program also features guest speakers, such as librarians who teach the children how to get their own library card and encourage them to go to story time, scientists who teach them about animals, firefighters who teach students about emergencies, and local musicians who build literacy through songs.
