This year, the Port Summer Show will be putting on Shrek the Musical, based on the 2001 DreamWorks film Shrek and William Steig’s 1990 book Shrek! Performances will be held on August 1-3 at 7:30 p.m. and August 4 at 2 p.m., in the air conditioned Schreiber High School auditorium. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children under 12, and free for seniors 65 and over.
Returning for his 10th year as director, Jason Summers will be leading the cast of nearly 70 Port Washington students, aged 12 to 18. “The kids respect his work. He can get a room of 60 or so kids quiet enough to hear a pin drop,” said Elise May, Port Summer Show’s co-president. Summers continued, “He makes everyone feel like they’re a star.”
The music for the show was written by Port Washington’s own, Jeanine Tesori, and the book and lyrics are by David Lindsay-Abaire. Joining the crew again, Schreiber’s graduate and mural artist Nick Gardella will be this year’s set designer. There will be intricate costumes and huge sets, including puppets and a 6 ft dragon. Port Summer Show will be one of the first theatre groups to perform Shrek the Musical since it closed on Broadway in 2010.
The Port Summer Show has been offering amazing, educational, musical theater opportunities for Port teens and low-cost, quality entertainment since 1972. Partnering with Schreiber High School, Port Summer Show provides students with a social activity and a unique opportunity to be involved as musicians in the pit orchestra, and as crew members, building sets and working backstage during the shows. Port Summer Show Co-President Susan Liberstein says, “Everyone here has the same goal, for the kids to have a great time. We want to put on a professional show while teaching kids discipline and acting and theatre”.
This year’s cast includes: Jake Arlow, Ellie Bain, Julia Bain, Oren Barasch, Diana Brennan, Sabrina Brennan, Rebecca Cerrone, Sophia Cerrone, Jenna Cohen, Alexandra DeAngelis, Sara DeMarino, Matthew DeMarino, Bridget Doherty, Jesse Epstein, Caitlin Ferris, Nina Grauer, Daisy Griffin, Julia Gurlitz, Julia Hayden, Isabel Johnson, Katherine Kirgis, Nate Krantz, Ashley Larsen, Jina Lay, Veronica Lee, Jeffrey Locksom, Sarah Mannix, Caroline Maroney, Susan Maroney, Liam Marsigliao, Yvette May, Elizabeth Muratore, Sameer Nanda, Ani O’hanlon, Veronika Onischenko, Tessa Peirls, Gabreilla Robinson, Grace Robinson, Sydney Ronis, Annie Rubin, Naome Sajnani, Rebecca Schaub, Colin Schroeder, Isabella Solando, Wynn Stopford, Kimberly Suzzan Stephanie-Anne Thomsen, Maxine Timm, Delia Van Praag, Isabelle Verdino, Claire Von Roeschlaub, Ariel Waldman, Arielle Waller, Katrina Wasserman, Emily Weinstein.
