Stellar athletes John Starks of the New York Knicks and Emerson Boozer, former New York Jets great, teamed up with the Junior League of Long Island on Friday, Dec. 12, at its fourth annual Children's Holiday Party at the North Shore University Hospital Children's Cancer Center in Manhasset. The Junior League is headquartered in Roslyn.
Starks, who hails from Tulsa, has made his own magic for the Knicks, being awarded by landslide vote the 1996/97 NBA Sixth Man of the Year. He is the Knicks' all time career leader with 852 three-point field goals, ninth in assists (2,175) and sixth in steals (633) on Knicks' all-time career list. He heads a foundation for youth and fund raises both during and off-season for many area charities geared toward children. In September 1998, he will be hosting a celebrity golf tournament in East Williston benefiting the John Starks Foundation and the Children's Cancer Center.
Boozer, now a director of Parks and Recreation in the Town of Huntington and a resident there, gave his all for the Jets from 1966 through 1975, starting on the Super Bowl 3 Championship team and ranking second on the all-time career rushing list. He gave his maximum effort as well for the children at the Children's Cancer Center and along with Starks, met and talked with the children and their families while handing out keepsake posters and signing autographs - a wonderful holiday treat for everyone creating lasting memories of such caring individuals.
