Edward B. Kenny, one of Roslyn's most venerable firefighters, was honored at the village meeting last Tuesday with not one, but three official proclamations citing his 46 years of service to the Roslyn community.

Nassau County Police Officer John G. Sweeney also received citations from the Village of Roslyn and the offices of Nassau County Supervisor Thomas R. Gulotta and State Senator Michael Balboni.

In addition, the village set aside March 3 as a "day of special recognition" for both men. The proclamations, in part, saluted both men for having a "profound and beneficial impact on the lives of many individuals in the community."

Edward B. Kenny has been a member of the Roslyn Rescue Hook & Ladder Company No. 1 for more than 46 years. Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Kenny served as a staff sergeant in the US Air Force during World War II. Following the war, he moved to Roslyn in 1946. He then joined Roslyn Rescue in 1951, where he has served ever since and apparently shows no signs of slowing down. During his time with Roslyn Rescue, he has served, among other duties, as chaplain of the fire department.

Officer Sweeney is a 28-year veteran of the Nassau County Police Department. For the past 26 years, he has patrolled the Roslyn area in Car 618 (he has used the same car the entire time). Officer Sweeney is married, has two daughters and lives in Glen Head.

After the awards ceremony, Officer Sweeney received some unexpected praise from longtime Roslyn resident Ellen Meyerhoff. "People tell me I live in a classy town," Meyerhoff said. "I just tell them I also live in a village where a policeman looks like a movie star!"

The village also issued a proclamation to Roslyn Boy Scout Troop #267 for their "scouting for food drive" for Island Harvest. The food drive, which will take place throughout the Island, is scheduled to last from March 21 to April 9. The village has decreed Saturday, March 21 as "Scouting for Food Day." A box will be placed at the village hall for the purpose of collecting food.
