Arthur Lehrer, owner of Quintessence - gifts and decorative accessories - in Roslyn Village for 23 years, died at his home on Feb. 15, 1998 after a long illness. He is survived by his wife and business partner, Phyllis; three daughters, Halli, Karen and Susan and five grandchildren. Mr. Lehrer was a veteran of WWII and a graduate of Lehigh University. The original Quintessence shop opened at 8 Main Street in 1972. In 1976 the shop was moved to larger quarters at 1358 Old Northern Boulevard (now occupied by the Robley Gallery.) The Lehrers closed their store in January 1995. Mr. Lehrer took great pirde in the Quintessence reputation which had grown over the years for varied and tasteful merchandise and a pleasant atmosphere in which to shop. The family and an excellent group of sales associates treated customers with the warmth and caring of friends.
A customer observing the scene at Quintessence as other people entered the shop and were greeted by name by staff members asked, "Don't you sell to strangers?" You were never a "stranger" for long at Quintessence.
