Police are still investigating a fire that took place last Friday at a Roslyn Harbor home and claimed the life of an elderly Roslyn resident.
Nina Delaney, 76, lived alone in the house at 515 Bryant Ave. According to Nassau County police, Ms. Delaney had previously lived there with her mother. Following her mother's death last month, Ms. Delaney remained at the house on Bryant Avenue.
At 1:41 p.m., Friday, April 3, the Roslyn Highlands Fire Department responded to the alarm at the Delaney residence. While firemen battled the blaze, Ms. Delaney was removed from a second story bedroom and transported to St. Francis Hospital by a Roslyn Rescue/Fire Departmental Ambulance where she was pronounced dead at 2:28 p.m. by a staff physician.
Ms. Delaney's body was removed to the Nassau County Medical Center where it was identified by her most immediate next of kin on Saturday morning.
The cause remains undetermined and still under investigation by investigators and detectives from the county Fire Marshall's office and Arson/Bomb Squad. So far, investigators say the fire is not suspicious.
According to investigators, the fire began in the residence's second floor patio deck. Roslyn firefighter Kevin Driscoll said a heavy wind off the harbor was probably why the fire spread quickly throughout the house.
Firemen from Roslyn Highlands arrived on the scene with 13 trucks, 135 men and six mutual aid Fire Departments. Both Roslyn Highlands and Roslyn Rescue were assisted by fire companies from Albertson, Glenwood, Sea Cliff, and Glen Cove. The company invested so much equipment in the fire that they spent the weekend retrieving lost parts. By Sunday, the Village of Roslyn Harbor had boarded up the house.
