After being a finalist three of the last four years, Country Estates Tennis Club won its first men's championship by defeating Woodbury Tennis Club in a hard-fought match played at the Shelter Rock Tennis Club in late September.
Country Estates made its way to the finals by first beating Old Westbury in the quarterfinals, three matches to two. The match was all tied up at two apiece, when Adam Glantz and Richard Werman won a thrilling three-setter to hand Country Estates the victory.
Then in the semi-finals, Country Estates defeated Care Free by the score of three to two with Bobby Brown and Derrick Rubin winning the decisive final match.
In the finals, Jay Greenfield and Gary Antenberg, playing superlatively, and undefeated in the playoffs, won in straight sets on court one. This was followed by an exciting three-set victory by Richard Werman and Ken Askenase on court two. Then as twilight was settling on the court, Neil Karnofsky and Larry Cohen sealed the championship for Country Estates in front of all the players and spectators, by winning a close and exciting match on court four.
Not to be forgotten, Michael Kimmelman also contributed to the team by winning an important match against Care Free. While the team missed the steady play of Michael Kaufman, who was out the whole season because of injury, Andy Shames and John Grant ably filled in and won many crucial matches over the summer. Last but not least, the team's coach, Nadeem Noor, deserves much praise for raising the team's skill level and strategic play. Nadeem was a supportive and encouraging force during the season. The team owes much of its success to him.
