In addition to initiating lawsuit against its former auditors, and holding out the possibility for more legal action against current and former employees, the Roslyn Board of Education has taken action on health insurance matters.

The Roslyn School District is a participating employer in the New York State Health Insurance Plan (NYSHIP). The resolution approved at the Jan. 13 meeting, however, mandates that benefits coming from that plan can only be received while board members are on the job. In other words, board members can't automatically receive NYSHIP benefits following their retirement.

The resolution applies to current school board members. Or as the resolution states: "[Currently] active board members who were previously enrolled in the district's health insurance plan during their active service shall not be eligible, upon their departure from office...to continue receiving health insurance benefits during the period of retirement from office."

The resolution concerning board members wasn't the only one dealing with insurance matters. In addition, the board approved a resolution that would remove certain part-time employees from receiving NYSHIP benefits in their retirement years.

Specifically, the resolution applies to both part-time bus drivers and part-time bus attendants. Both positions will now be excluded "as an employee category from continued coverage in retirement in NYSHIP."

The resolution noted that the Roslyn School District entered into its agreement with NYSHIP in 1972. The contract allowed for the board to make certain employees ineligible for retirement coverage as long as their most recent date of employment with the district was after April 1, 1977.

On traffic and safety issues, the board approved a resolution that will have traffic signs installed at the Roslyn Middle School. The signs will read: "No left turn, except buses, between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m., and 3 p.m. and 4 p.m."

The resolution came on a recommendation of both the district-wide Health & Safety Committee and Middle School Health & Safety Committee. Both determined that in the interest of public safety, additional signage was needed at the Middle School.

Also concerning the Middle School, the board approved a resolution awarding a contract to Marfi Contracting Corp. for work at that building. Such work includes installing additional lumber at the knee wall over an art room, capping four fan units over two technology rooms, music and instrumental rooms, and the auditorium. The work also calls for the installation of seven skylights and four roof drains.

The next regular board meeting will be held Thursday, Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Commons room at Roslyn High School.
