While many of their high school classmates are participating in a variety of high school sports sanctioned by the New York Public High School Athletic Association, a group of 14 dedicated Wheatley students have been participating in the exciting sport of roller hockey. These students compete in a league sponsored by the Islandwide High School Roller Hockey League (IHSRH). The team, which is comprised of students in grades seven through nine, is called the Wheatley Wildcats, and they compete at the JV level. While the team has adopted the mascot of the Wheatley School, the roller hockey team does not receive any funding from nor is it affiliated in any way with the East Williston Union Free School District. The IHSRH is affiliated with the Eastern Collegiate Roller Hockey Association, and its mission is to promote the sport of roller hockey and create a wholesome environment in which students can compete in this sport in a safe manner.
This marks the first season in which these students are competing in the league, and many players will advance to the Varsity level next year. The team is coached by Lou Anne Molzahn and Scott Raffa, and they practice and play their games at Skate Safe in Bethpage. Information regarding the Islandwide League can be obtained by going to its website at www.ihsrh.com.
The team's goaltender is Billy Krapf. Defensemen include Tyler Wolf, Nick Caplan, Ethan Langer and Robert Valenza. The offense is led by forwards Anthony Coletto, Alex Ginsberg, Brandan Lustig, Chris Krapf, Josh Haberman, Michael Raffa, Andrew Seader and Maruicio Lima.
