Roslyn-based Cub Pack 267 will give out "Pinewood Derby" race car kits to all members, and to all boys (grades 1 through 5) attending an upcoming meeting with their parents.

The meeting, which will be held Tuesday evening, March 1, are for youngsters considering joining the Cub Scouts. The kits contain the parts necessary to build a wooden car that is raced on an indoor, gravity-fed (hill) track.

Each boy, with the help of his parents, can design, build and paint the car to his liking - and compete for prizes in a number of different categories: fastest car, most unusual design, best paint-job, and more. Traditionally, the winners at the Pack level go on to race in the council championships at the Source Mall in Westbury, in front of hundreds of spectators.

The Pinewood Derby is one of Cub Scout's most popular events. Since its inception in 1953, well over 80,000,000 kits have been sold to Cub Scouts nationwide. But race cars will not be the only activity at the meeting. To kick-off the spring semester, Pack 267 will be hosting a "Welcome Party" for all who attend (members and non-members alike). Games, relay races, songs, skits, and prizes and refreshments will culminate in the distribution of the car kits.

The meeting will be from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1 at Temple Beth Sholom in Roslyn Heights (401 Roslyn Road, immediately North of Northern State Pkwy. exit 29). RSVP: Steve Cahn, 621-3890.
