An article in the March 13 edition of Newsday regarding the average class size for eighth grade classes at the Wheatley School was incorrect. The report listed 13 as the average number of students in eighth grade classes for the 2003-04 school year. In reviewing the official New York State Report Card data, the section on Average Class Size lists the following for 2003-04:

English Grade 8, 19 students.

Math Grade 8, 18 students.

Science Grade 8, 20 students.

Social Studies Grade 8, 21 students.

If these numbers are averaged, the correct number should be 19.5 as the average class size for eighth grade classes at the Wheatley School.

In addition, the graduation information reported was taken from an incorrect state report. The correct data is as follows:

2003-04 Wheatley graduates continuing education after graduation:

Percent enrolling in four-year colleges - 93 percent.

Percent enrolling in two-year colleges - 4 percent.

Carolyn S. Harris, Ed.D.

Superintendent of Schools
