Letters to the Editor

I strongly endorse Cliff Saffron for re-election to the Roslyn Schools Board of Education.

I have had many occasions to observe Mr. Saffron during the past year in his role as a school board member, both at board of education meetings and at budget advisory committee meetings.

Mr. Saffron has been a calming influence during difficult times and a driving force to help the district reorganize its economic condition and goals. Throughout the process, Mr. Saffron has served all members of the community well; he listens to all sides of an issue and ensures that proper research and discussion of a topic is completed before a decision is made. He labored intensively, working with community members, administrators, teachers and students, to ensure the adoption of a fair budget.

But, his concerns go beyond the economics of the district. He considers the education of Roslyn students, both in the classroom and in extracurricular matters, of extreme importance.

Mr. Saffron's re-election to the board will help the district as it continues righting its economic matters and will ensure that education of the children will remain of paramount importance. I urge all eligible voters to vote to re-elect Cliff Saffron on May 17.

On April 20, I had the pleasure of introducing my neighbors on Shortridge Drive to East Williston School Board candidate Sigi Huhn. They were impressed with Sigi's efforts to revise and improve the 2005-2006 budget. They were also pleased to learn of Sigi's financial expertise as a CPA and auditor and felt that this type of background was needed. The door-to-door introduction allowed Sigi to clarify several items of misinformation that were circulating. He assured my neighbors that if he were elected, full day kindergarten would not be eliminated, that he was not in favor of larger class sizes and that he did in fact support passage of the budget.

I urge members of our community to come to "Meet the Candidates Night" on Tuesday, May 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Wheatley cafeteria to hear for themselves what Sigi wants for our schools. Sigi is an intelligent, professional and articulate man who truly has the kids' best interests at heart. He possesses the financial knowledge to manage and direct our taxpayers' money where it will be used to our district's best advantage to maintain our reputation for outstanding academic success. Please join me in voting for Sigi Huhn on May 17.

It gives me great pleasure to write this letter urging you to re-elect Neal Roher to the East Williston Board of Education.

Neal has demonstrated that he possesses the personal qualities that enable him to continue to best represent me, my children, and the families of our community at large. He is an individual whom our youngsters can continue to look to as their voice, a person who is a model citizen and human being with sensitivity and enormous integrity. He listens carefully; assures that he makes informed decisions and speaks thoughtfully. He has an innate kindness and brings a sense of calm to any challenging situation. Neal is an involved family man and citizen.

A practicing attorney, Neal has been involved in a myriad of civic activities over the course of many, many years. From former head of the Westwood Civic Association to involvement in youth sports to being a trustee of the Old Westbury Hebrew Congregation, Neal has always been a person who selflessly gives a great deal to the community.

Neal is an involved parent with three children in our schools.

I hope you will join my husband and me and vote for Neal Roher on Tuesday, May 17 at the Wheatley School gym between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. Remember, every vote is important.

Phyllis and David Cohen
