The Roslyn Booster Basketball girls sixth grade championship was won by the Fireballs.
In a dynamic post season, the Fireballs burnt up the competition. During the season the Fireballs were energized by leading scorer Paige Mintz and point guard Michelle Weinman. The team won a first round quarter final game, earning them a tough semifinal match against the regular season, first-place team. This was a dramatic game characterized by a constant seesaw battle. The Fireballs were led by leading scorer Paige Mintz with 14 points and Michelle Weinman with 8 points. The Fireballs utilized a tenacious swarming defense led by Rachel Smith, Megan Murphy, Emma Gluck and Melissa Doherty. Aggressive rebounding was provided by Rachel Smith, Emma Gluck and Paige Mintz. The turning point of the game occurred whem Emma Gluck hit a clutch-free throw giving the Fireballs a one point lead. At that point the lead kept exchanging hands with the Fireballs, eventually able to solidify the one point victory.
The championship game was another well-played game characterized by outstanding teamwork and team defense. Nicole Vaccaro was able to connect on two pick and roll plays giving the Fireballs the lead. Michelle Weinman continued her aggressive drives to the basket scoring 10 points. Paige Mintz provided her consistent offensive output with 14 points, scoring from all over the court. Rachel Smith, Emma Gluck, Megan Murphy and Melissa Doherty contributed to the victory with intense team defense and by setting a variety of picks to support the offensive output.
The Fireballs won the sixth grade Booster Basketball championship, demonstrating a comprehensive team concept. They were able to play a swarming defense, switching assignments based on the game situation and create a variety of offensive plays. This was a rewarding season because every single player contributed to the success of the team.
