If one is looking for dramatic symbolism with respect to the Roslyn School District vote on May 17, then please take note that the total votes cast in favor of the 2005-06 school budget was "1776"! Is Roslyn headed for a new beginning? I really think so. Is Roslyn working through a revolution of its own? Perhaps. Is Roslyn showing its true civic colors by giving overwhelming support in large numbers to one of America's greatest ideals: a free public school education for all of its citizens? I truly believe that.

Over 70 percent of the district's voters said "yes" to the budget and nearly 80 percent said "yes" to the capital plan. I pledge to build on that positive and promising mandate, and I am sustained by knowing that the board of education, the professional staff and the citizens of this fine community have been and will continue to be part of this effort.

The restoration of the integrity and credibility of the school district is no easy task, but, take my word, the mission is well under way. Please have patience and stay involved as we move on.

David J. Helme,

Superintendent of Schools
