On a sunny day in June, the Roslyn Red Sox won the girls Pro Division Softball Championship of the Roslyn Little League. In a close game, the Red Sox beat the Mets 8 to 5. The Red Sox were led by the pitching of Paige Mintz who limited the Mets to one run. The Red Sox had a consistent offensive attack led by Missy Edelblum, Joanna Finkelstein, Paige Mintz, Kendall Berman and Zoe Kline. Clutch hitting was also provided by Arianna Bloom, Alana Stein, Amanda Reiner, Emily Weinshenk and Melissa Doherty. The Red Sox controlled the early part of the game storming out to a 5-1lead. The Mets staged a come back, closing the gap to 6-5. The Red Sox played a stifling defense to shut out the Mets for the final two innings. The team had spectacular defense at shortstop led by Paige Mintz and Joanna Finkelstein. Zoe Kline and Alana Stein were vacuums at first base. Amanda Reiner, Emily Weinshenk, Brittany Mockler and Melissa Doherty played great defense at second base. Ariana Bloom had another outstanding all around game in the outfield.
In a semifinal game the Red Sox defeated the Cardinals 12-3. Paige Mintz, Joanna Finkelstein, Kendall Berman, Missy Edelblum, Zoe Kline, Alana Stein, and Amanda Reiner once again led the offense in this game. Paige Mintz and Kendall Berman shut down the Cardinals, ensuring the victory for the Red Sox. Zoe Kline caught a runner attempting to steal home and the runner was eventually tagged out in a run down play, perfectly performed by Missy Edelblum and Paige Mintz.
The Red Sox exemplified a team concept throughout the entire season. They finished in first place during the regular season with a 9-2 record. Paige Mintz, Joanna Finkelstein, Ariana Bloom, and Kendall Berman provided consistent and controlled pitching. Missy Edelblum, Ariana Bloom, Joanna Finkelstein and Kendall Berman made outstanding plays in the outfield. The catching position was another solid area for the Red Sox. Zoe Kline, Kendall Berman, Alana Stein, and Emily Weinshenk provided consistent defense and were able to throw out many runners stealing third base. Brittany Mockler made one of the most outstanding plays of the season at second place, backhanding a ball in the hole spinning, and making a quick throw to first base for the out. Team most valuable player, Paige Mintz was solid on the mound and led the team in hitting, home runs and runs batted in. The team averaged one double play a game and played heads-up defense all year.
Other highlights during the season, included the Sportsmanship Award for Melissa Doherty and the Coaches' Award for Ariana Bloom. Paige Mintz, Missy Edelblum, Zoe Kline, and Joanna Finkelstein were voted to the All Star team. Assistant coaches Greg Bloom, Andy Finkelstein and David Kline provided invaluable help in the girl's improvement during the season. Manager Guy Mintz was proud of the girl's play and support for one another. This was a team that was fueled by chocolate, friendship and amazing spirit. The curse of the Red Sox is definitely over!
