At its June 16 meeting, the Roslyn Board of Education announced its appointment of Dr. Daniel Brenner as its assistant superintendent for curriculum. Dr. Brenner replaces Dr. Charles Piemonte, whose retirement was effective at the end of June. Dr. Brenner's tenure began July 1.
According to school officials, the appointment was made with "great confidence" from BOE members. The appointment came after a prolonged interview process in which 50 individuals applied for the position.
Dr. Brenner moved to Roslyn from Yorktown Heights, in Westchester County. Dr. Brenner had served as principal of Yorktown High School for the past five years. Dr. Brenner is a graduate of Tufts University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree cum laude in 1981. He holds both a master of science degree and a doctor of philosophy from Hofstra University.
He began his educational career as a school psychologist in the Great Neck public schools. In 1995, Dr. Brenner became principal of that district's Village School. School officials have praised Dr. Brenner as an "administrator with a comprehensive range of experience" and someone with "impressive firsthand knowledge of the many aspects of an advanced curriculum and instruction program like Roslyn's."
When hiring Dr. Brenner, BOE members also cited his knowledge in the hiring and supervision of staff members, college placement, Advanced Placement programs, academic intervention services and budget development. "He has been a strong leader in the area of educational technology, advancing the integration of technology into instruction," a release from the Roslyn School District stated.
In addition to his administrative experience, Dr. Brenner, during his educational career, has also been a girls varsity basketball coach, a mentor for colleagues and students, and a crisis team leader. Dr. Brenner continues to work as a clinical psychologist, specializing in adolescents and their families.
In March, the BOE appointed Kevin Scanlon as Roslyn High School principal. Scanlon's own tenure also began July 1. The BOE is still conducting a search for a permanent superintendent for the district.
