Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi, joined by Nassau County Commissioner of Public Works Peter Gerbasi, Nassau County Legislator Diane Yatauro (D-Glen Cove), North Hempstead Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman and North Hempstead Town Councilman Thomas Dwyer, recently announced that the county has completed the Bayville Road raising project and is under way with Phase I of a three phase project to improve the flow of traffic at the intersection of Glen Cove Road and Northern Boulevard in Greenvale.

"Bayville Road and the intersection of Glen Cove Road and Northern Boulevard have long been roadway concerns in Nassau County," said County Executive Suozzi.

"We wanted to alleviate the flooding that the residents who travel Bayville Road have had to cope with. We also want to improve the traffic flow at the intersection of Glen Cove Road and Northern Boulevard to make it safer for the local residents, motorists and pedestrians. The neighborhood surrounding this intersection has long been concerned about this area and we are happy we will be able to improve the safety and flow of vehicles through this major intersection."

"The intersection of Glen Cove Road and Northern Boulevard is one of the busiest in Nassau County and has been a problem for years," added Councilman Tom Dwyer. "This project goes a long way toward correcting the traffic flow problems and safety concerns that residents of this area have had to deal with."

The County Executive announced that the Bayville Road Raising project was done to minimize flooding. The road was prone to localized flooding and the County raised the road up to three feet in some areas and between one and three feet in other areas, to reduce this problem. In addition to the road raising, the County also provided downtown beautification efforts including Victorian style lampposts along the street and attractive brick work. The project cost $5 million.

"This project is long overdue and very good for the residential, as well as tourist community," said Legislator Yatauro.

The County is also under way with Phase I - a $1.2 million Glen Cove Road and Northern Boulevard intersection project to improve the flow of traffic through this heavily traveled intersection.

A right hand and left hand turning lane to southbound Glen Cove Road, just north of Northern Boulevard will be added. In the north/south direction this is the most heavily traveled intersection in all of Nassau County.

Phase II of the project will be to add a merging lane on southbound Glen Cove Road, just south of Northern Boulevard.
