In a repeat of their fall 2004 season finale, the Mineola Power Girls U-13 soccer team played for first place in their last game of the spring season. Unfortunately, the defending champs couldn't play the spoiler role against the undefeated Rockville Center Riptide and were defeated 1-0. The girls gave it their all in what was an exciting climax to a very successful season.
The Power finished in second place with a record of 7-2-1. The strength of the team continues to be its defense. Led by Captain Julie Novak, Power defenders include Stephanie Monroe, Casey Siwinski and Mary Torrance. Goalkeepers Alesa Kolenovic and Emily Willis kept the team in every contest, only allowing an amazing 8 goals in 10 games.
Offensively, the girls established a new team record with 25 goals for the season. The offense was lead by Samantha Basile who racked up 11 goals this spring. Sam is an all-around player who has worked hard at developing her offensive skills. The other leading Power scorers were Briana Valentine with 5 goals, Tess Alexander and Jessica Breslin had 3 each. The other forwards who contributed to the record goal output were Jacklyn Sinisi and Leighmarie Weber.
The players responsible for both ends of the field were the midfielders, led by Kristen Hock and Tina Marie Basile.
With a strong second place finish, the girls are looking forward to moving up a division and facing even tougher competition in the fall.
