Last month, Nassau County officials announced that major road construction at the intersection of Glen Cove Road and Northern Boulevard in Greenvale was under way.
Phase I of the project is expected to be "substantially complete" by Aug. 15.
County officials add that Phase II will be in design in 2005 and 2006, with construction to begin in late 2006, pending a cooperative venture with local business owners on the property acquisition process.
Construction of Phase II is anticipated to be complete in 2007, contingent upon the property acquisition process being completed in a timely manner.
"The intersection of Glen Cove Road and Northern Boulevard is one of the busiest in Nassau County and has been a problem for years," said Councilman Tom Dwyer last month. "This project goes a long way toward correcting the traffic flow problems and safety concerns that residents of this area have had to deal with."
Phase I of the Greenvale traffic plan is a $1.2 million project at the Glen Cove Road and Northern Boulevard intersection. It is designed to improve the flow of traffic through this heavily traveled intersection.
A right hand and left hand turning lane to southbound Glen Cove Road, just north of Northern Boulevard will be added. According to Nassau County officials, in the north/south direction this is the most heavily traveled intersection in the entire county.
The purpose of Phase II of the project will be to add a merging lane on southbound Glen Cove Road, just south of Northern Boulevard.
"We [want] to improve the traffic flow at the intersection of Glen Cove Road and Northern Boulevard to make it safer for the local residents, motorists and pedestrians," County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi also said at last month's announcement. "The neighborhood surrounding this intersection has long been concerned about this area and we are happy we will able to improve the safety and flow of vehicles through this major intersection."
