On a bright and sunny morning eerily reminiscent of the same day four years ago, members of the Roslyn Rescue Fire Company huddled closely for a memorial service to remember those who were lost on Sept. 11, 2001. The informal and private service, led by Chaplain Dustin Dwyer, was held at Roslyn Rescue Station 2 in front of the memorial for Ex-Chief Thomas Langone and Ex-Captain Peter Langone. The Langone brothers perished during the perilous rescue effort four years ago while on duty as emergency workers in New York City.

Tom Langone, a New York City Police Officer assigned to the elite Emergency Service Unit, and an instructor at the Nassau County Fire Service Academy in Bethpage, served in countless leadership roles in his nearly two decades with the Roslyn Rescue Fire Company. His older brother Peter, a New York City firefighter assigned to Squad 252 in Brooklyn, served for nearly two decades with the volunteer fire company, and was remembered this week as a strong leader and staunch supporter of intense training for firefighters.

Since their deaths, the Langone brothers have been memorialized in several ways, by both the fire company and the community, including the display of eternal lights in front of Station 2 on Mineola Avenue, a new fire truck dedicated in their memory, and a renaming of Mineola Avenue between Warner Avenue and the Long Island Expressway. Street signs there now read "Langone Brothers Avenue."

Fire officials note that for more information on the Langone Brothers Memorial and additional photos, visit www.roslynrescue.org, and follow the links.
