The LIJSL's Albertson Fury 90, a Girls Under 15 team, which won the State Cup in June, will be featured on German TV this fall, on ZDF, one of the major European networks. The documentary will be shown on ZDF cable subsidiaries Doku-Kanal Sport and Phoenix.
The film will be rebroadcast next summer when the 2006 World Cup will be played throughout Germany.
The documentary focuses on a high-level youth soccer program in the United States and the influence that the possibility of obtaining that elusive college scholarship has on the players and their parents. Why do families drive all the way from Staten Island, Stony Brook or Manhattan to Nassau County for an Albertson soccer practice? Why do 15-year-old players not go to sleepovers and parties for the sake of a soccer game the next day?
The film has shots of the Albertson Fury 90 winning the State Cup and then throwing coach Paul Riley in a swimming pool during the victory celebration.
There's video of fancy footwork during the Paul Riley Soccer School last summer and many interviews with Albertson players and their parents.
The Fury 90 are led by Jenna Pepe plus Molly Bruh, who also competes for State ODP, Julia Kaufman (also on the Regional Team) plus Vicky DiMartino and Klara Jenkins, who both play for the National Youth Team.
In women's soccer, Germany is the World Cup champion but the United States is the Olympic gold medalist. Both nations have alternated between number 1 and 2 in the world rankings in women's soccer for the past three years.
Whereas sports are an important part of the education process in the United States, they are not an important aspect of the German college experience. Hence, the interest from German TV over how college scholarships influence youth soccer.
