(Ed. Note: The following letter was sent to Thomas R. Suozzi, county executive and is printed here at the author's request.)
I remember meeting with you at least three times, the last time at Ben's restaurant with the Greenvale Civic Association in reference to the intersection of Glen Cove Road and Northern Blvd.
I know that the project that widened this intersection has been of particular interest to you for many years since it was a major route from Glen Cove to the rest of the world.
I am sorry to say the lane designations that were conjured up by some traffic engineer leave a great deal to be desired.
The major problem is northbound traffic on Glen Cove Road approaching Northern Blvd. There are four lanes. From left to right, facing north, there are two lanes to make a left-hand turn (one would be more than adequate), one lane to crossing Northern Blvd. and continue north and one lane that serves as both a left-hand and straight-ahead lane. This leaves one lane for the vehicle that wants to continue north.
I can tell you that in the morning rush hour and the evening rush hour the northbound traffic backs up to a bumper-to-bumper crawl for as much as two miles because of the poor designation of the traffic lanes.
I am not a traffic engineer, but am logical and observant. I hope you can do something to correct this situation and I would be glad to meet with you or your traffic engineer any morning about 8 a.m. or any evening about 5:30 or 6 p.m.
