For the fourth consecutive year the Wheatley boys varsity cross-country team has won the Nassau County Class "C" Championship and qualified to compete as a team in the New York State Cross Country Championship Meet. Under the leadership of Coach Dan Walsh, the cross country team has performed a championship level that is unprecedented in the history of that sport at Wheatley. A review of the records indicate that during the late 1960s the Wheatley cross country team won three consecutive county titles.
Wheatley ran to a record of 10-2 in dual meet competition and won its Division title. In the Conference Championship Meet, in which they competed against Class "B" schools as well, Wheatley finished an impressive third, barely losing to arch-rival Class "C" school, Cold Spring Harbor. The runners avenged that loss by outrunning the Seahawks and all other Class "C" schools in the Nassau County Championship Meet. Senior Yuting Chiag led the team to victory and was the overall Class "C" champion. The team was also bolstered by the return of senior Ryan Birnbaum, who had missed the first half of the season due to an injury. Ryan, who is the only Wheatley team member to have competed in all four of the New York State Championship Meets, finished second on the team, 10 seconds behind Yuting. Other scorers for Wheatley were senior Harriman Lee, juniors Chris Calin, Jon Pfadenhauer and Greg Cutajar-Wynne and freshman Stefan Schwartz.
The team competed in the New York State Meet on Saturday, Nov 12, traveling to upstate Queensbury High School near Glens Falls. Joining the team was junior Abby Squire who qualified for the state meet by finishing a respectable 24th place at the County Meet. This marked Abby's third consecutive trip to the state competition.
