At its Nov. 17 meeting, the Roslyn Board of Education issued an invitation for parents and local residents to become part of another new committee for the school district.

The Committee on Student Welfare has been formed and the BOE is encouraging parents of students at all levels in the district, to participate.

Also at the meeting, the BOE issued a statement outlining the goals and purposes of the new committee. The statement reads:

"It is our shared belief that safe, healthy and informed communities serve as the foundation of our society.

"The safety and welfare of our students is an essential element of the goals of our school district. It is the shared responsibility of parents and educators to develop, support and encourage programs and activities which will lead to positive actions and attitudes in regard to the issues of drug and alcohol abuse, smoking, bullying and gambling. We also seek to address such issues as cheating, moral values and peer pressure in our schools and in our community."

In addition, the manifesto states that the school must strive to:

* Form a partnership with parents, educators and members of the community to develop consistent messages in regard to the issues "outlined previously."

* Deliver these messages through the home and the schools in a manner that they become part of the essential culture of the schools and the community.

* Provide educational opportunities for the training of educators and parents who transmit these "aforementioned messages to our children."

* Encourage and support educational, cultural and recreational activities which enhance the development of emotionally healthy children in a safe and supportive environment.
