It came down to one play. Three months worth of hard work came down to one play in the semi final game against the team from Las Vegas. The DAC Jets, led by Manhaset resident Yianni Gavalas and Roslyn resident Nicky Athanasopoulos, found themselves in a 7-7 tie with the Las Vegas representative. If the Jets make this play they advance to the final game which will be televised on ESPN on Christmas day. If they do not make this play, they go home.
The overtime session in NFL Flag Football is a lot like the college game. Each team is given one drive, starting form the five yard line. The team that gains the most yards wins the game. The DAC Jets needed only three more yards to win the game but it was their last down. As the play started, the crowd at the Wide World of Sports Complex in Disney fell silent. As Yianni rolled left, he spotted Eddie Roscigno breaking left away from his man. Yianni released the ball with pinpoint accuracy to the soft hands of a waiting Eddie Roscigno. As Eddie caught the ball the DAC Jets parents, siblings, grandparents, and fans all ran on to the field to hug the players.
In the final game, Yianni Gavalas and Nicky Athanasopoulos connected seven times, once for the final touchdown of the game on their way to a 20-6 victory over the Albany Giants and the National Title.
