At a recent Board of Trustees meeting, Mayor John Durkin presented Deputy Mayor Marshall Bernstein with the New York Conference of Mayors (NYCOM) Award for his more than 25 "continuous" years of service to the Village of Roslyn. During the presentation Mayor Durkin stated, "It has been my privilege to work alongside Deputy Mayor Bernstein, there are few people I admire more. Marshall has always been the voice of reason and a friend of the applicant, and through his hard work and dedication, Marshall has touched the lives of hundreds of residents, past and present."
The mayor highlighted Marshall's service to the village, which began in 1981 when he was appointed to the Historic District Board. In 1985, he was appointed to the Planning Board and it was realized early on that the residents of Roslyn were fortunate to have such a tremendously talented and dedicated neighbor. From 1990 to 1995 Marshall then served the village as a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals. In November of 1995, Marshall was asked to fill a vacancy on the Board of Trustees and in 1996 he ran for that position and won the election, and has since been re-elected five more times. Tirelessly, working to make Roslyn a better place, Marshall, while he was on the Planning Board was also a member of the Master Plan Committee and is a past president of both the Roslyn Pines Pool Club and the Roslyn Pines Civic Association.
Fellow Board of Trustees members, Marta Genovese, Nolan Myerson and Craig Westergard joined Mayor Durkin by congratulating Deputy Mayor Bernstein for his 26 years of service to the Village of Roslyn and agreed it has been their privilege to know and work with him. Trustee Craig Westergard stated, "Marshall Bernstein is a true professional, he understands good government and always demonstrates good leadership and loyalty to the village residents." Trustee Marta Genovese followed by saying, "Marshall's clear thinking and sound business judgment has helped us think our way through countless issues, and his self-effacing sense of humor has lightened many thorny debates. I am always amazed by the diligence and thoroughness he brings to every matter he attends to and am grateful to have him as a friend and mentor for many years." Trustee Nolan Myerson concluded by briefly stating, "There are challenges ahead and Marshall's vision and strong sense of civic duty will help inspire the community to make decisions that will enhance the lives of all village residents."
He attended Cornell University for his undergraduate studies and received a law degree from Harvard Law School. He served for two years as a lieutenant with the 122nd Signal Battalion, Second Infantry Division. A successful attorney, Marshall practices law in Manhattan, where he is a partner in the law firm of Robinson Brog. Married to his wife, Marilyn, of 39 years, they have a son, Andrew, a daughter, Lauren, and are the proud new grandparents of baby Spencer Dylan. For nearly 33 years, the Bernsteins have been members of Temple Sinai, located in Roslyn Heights.
