Opinion

We are writing in support of Sigi Huhn for re-election to the East Williston School Board.

We have three children. Our son attends Willets Road, our oldest daughter attends North Side and our youngest will be entering kindergarten at North Side next year. Obviously we have an interest in the long-term educational health of the district. At the same time, we are taxpayers and homeowners and are concerned with tax increases and home values. We believe that Sigi Huhn has done an admirable job balancing these interests for the benefit of all and deserves re-election.

His record is outstanding. Over the past four years, since Sigi has become involved, our tax increases have averaged less than 5 percent, the budgets have passed by wide margins, widespread repairs have been undertaken, a major technology initiative has been implemented, class sizes have been reduced, Special Ed enhancements have been effected and classes, clubs and co-curricular activities have been added. Of particular benefit to working parents, such as us, is the SCOPES program to be implemented in September. This is at no cost to the district.

At the same time, under Sigi's leadership, our national ranking has moved back upward and our fiscal health has improved, as evidenced by an increase in the General Fund Balance from $3.65 to $3.9 million, a Capital Project Fund of $1.3 million and an Unreserved Fund Balance of $1.26 million, the highest the district has ever legally had. In short, Sigi has found educational enhancements and facility repairs in a fiscally responsible manner. Let's re-elect him to continue more of the same, for the benefit of all, both taxpayers with school-age children and those without. We can't afford to lose him.

Please join us in voting for Sigi Huhn on Tuesday, May 20. The vote will be held at the Wheatley Gymnasium from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
