Terrarium Planting Workshop

Ever popular, terrariums are a beautiful and elegant addition to a home. Participants in this workshop can create their own miniature glass gardens, with assistance from the nursery’s design staff. Bring your own glass vessel or the nursery will provide one. Cost: $45.00 plus tax includes all materials. Participants may bring their own glass vessel and price will be determined by its size. Planting For Privacy

At 11 a.m., Hicks Nurseries will present a planting for privacy workshop. Participants will learn which trees and shrubs will grow tall and full to help make their yard the private oasis they always wanted it to be. Hicks Landscapes’ designer Rich Abate will discuss the best options available to gain valuable privacy or to block out undesirable views. It’s Time: How to Bring Plants Indoors For Winter

After a summer nurturing plants outdoors, it will soon be time to transfer them indoors for the winter months. An informative seminar will explain the steps necessary to successfully transfer a plant indoors. From insect control to lighting and soil, all will be covered. The lecture will take place at Hicks Nurseries, at 100 Jericho Turnpike in Westbury. Call 334-0066.

Helen’s Run/Walk 

Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults is hosting its 17th annual walk-a-thon, but this year they have added a run component to the event. Registration and starting point for Helen’s Run/Walk is at the Sands Point Park & Preserve, 127 Middle Neck Rd., Sands Point. Check in and registration:  7:30 – 8:30 a.m., start- 9 a.m. Registration fee: $25.00 (in advance); day of event: $35.00. Free Prostate Screening

St. Francis Hospital will host a free prostrate screening that includes a blood test for prostate-specific antigen (PSA). No appointments necessary. This program is for men between the ages of 50-75 (40 with risk factors) who are not currently under the care of an urologist. The event will take place from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at The DeMatteis Center for Cardiac Research & Education, 101 Northern Blvd., Greenvale. No fee. Please call 629-2013 for information only.

The Senior Activity Committee (SAC) at The Park At East Hills will host a play, 12 Angry Men at the John Engeman Theater. The play begins at 2 p.m. with dinner to follow.

Wednesday Morning Mussar Study 

Come to our first Mussar Study with Rabbi Andrew Gordon at 11 a.m. Mussar is a medieval and Chasidic study that focuses on Tikkun Middot, the refining of the soul’s traits.  Participants will use the Torah, ancient Mussar texts, and the modern commentary of Alan Morinis to focus on character development.  Each month they will study a different Middah - a quality of the heart - such as patience, generosity, humility, compassion and simplicity. On October 10, the Senior Activity Committee (SAC) at The Park At East Hills will join with The Rockefeller Estate and Union Church for lunch at Sunset Cove restaurant in the historic Hudson Valley. The bus leaves the park at 8 a.m. 

Friday, October 11 

Kulanu Shabbat 

Come to Kulanu Shabbat at 6:30 p.m. on Friday evening, October 11. It is National Coming Out Day, a day when Temple Sinai raises its voices and comes out in support of the LGBTQ community.  Temple Sinai will be hosting special Shabbat services lead by the Kulanu Committee and Generation Equality.  Join the temple and show your support.
