Ever popular, terrariums are a beautiful and elegant addition to a home. Participants in this workshop can create their own miniature glass gardens, with assistance from the nursery’s design staff. Bring your own glass vessel or the nursery will provide one. Cost: $45.00 plus tax includes all materials. Participants may bring their own glass vessel and price will be determined by its size. At 11 a.m., Hicks Nurseries will present a planting for privacy workshop. Participants will learn which trees and shrubs will grow tall and full to help make their yard the private oasis they always wanted it to be. Hicks Landscapes’ designer Rich Abate will discuss the best options available to gain valuable privacy or to block out undesirable views. After a summer nurturing plants outdoors, it will soon be time to transfer them indoors for the winter months. An informative seminar will explain the steps necessary to successfully transfer a plant indoors. From insect control to lighting and soil, all will be covered. Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults is hosting its 17th annual walk-a-thon, but this year they have added a run component to the event. Registration and starting point for Helen’s Run/Walk is at the Sands Point Park & Preserve, 127 Middle Neck Rd., Sands Point. Check in and registration: 7:30 – 8:30 a.m., start- 9 a.m. Registration fee: $25.00 (in advance); day of event: $35.00. Event is limited to 400 participants; early sign-up is recommended. St. Francis Hospital will host a free prostrate screening that includes a blood test for prostate-specific antigen (PSA). No appointments necessary. This program is for men between the ages of 50-75 (40 with risk factors) who are not currently under the care of an urologist. The Senior Activity Committee (SAC) at The Park At East Hills will host a play, 12 Angry Men at the John Engeman Theater. The play begins at 2 p.m. with dinner to follow.
Come to our first Mussar Study with Rabbi Andrew Gordon at 11 a.m. Mussar is a medieval and Chasidic study that focuses on Tikkun Middot, the refining of the soul’s traits. Participants will use the Torah, ancient Mussar texts, and the modern commentary of Alan Morinis to focus on character development. Each month they will study a different Middah - a quality of the heart - such as patience, generosity, humility, compassion and simplicity. All are welcome.
