Lecture Series

Jews of Iran with guest lecturer Marcia Haddad Ikonomopoulos, Judaic scholar. She is the director of the Kehila Kedosha Janina Museum in NYC. In this lecture she will discuss Persian Jews, the Jews of Iran who have a fascinating history of over 2700 years. Once again their ability to survive is being challenged. Scholarship Dinner

The 20th Annual Scholarship Diner for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Second-Year Scholarship Program will take place at 7 p.m. at the Swan Club in Glenwood Landing. Dr. Suzanne Vromen and her family lived in Belgium in 1940 when the Nazis invaded the country. Fortunately, they escaped and found refuge in the Belgian Congo. Womanspace is 30 Years Old

Founded in 1979 by a group of women reflecting the Women’s Movement whose avowed purpose is to help women at various points in their lives when they need assistance and support. The goal of Womanspace is to provide a place where women gather to share concerns about their changing roles in society. A wide range of community conferences have involved such institutions as Hofstra University, Queens College and Great Neck Adult Education covering such issues as: Health, Global Feminism, Building An Intergenerational Community and a Multi-Ethnic Conference. Memoir writing has also become a popular activity giving women the opportunity to express themselves in a literary fashion. Meetings are held every Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Great Neck Senior Center, 80 Grace Ave., Great Neck. Call 829-6566. Junior League of Long Island Events

•The Junior League of Long Island’s nonprofit Thrift Shop, 1395 Old Northern Blvd, Roslyn Village, is having its third annual Coat Extravaganza. Coats for men women and children are being sold at unbelievable prices. Proceeds from this event go to benefit programs for women and children in the community. The event is ongoing, until around December. New and used coats will be collected at this time.

•On the first Wednesday of every month the Thrift Shop will be hosting story time for children of all ages. The first story time will be on Oct 7.

•The league will be hosting its first annual amateur photo contest. The theme is “women and children.” Collections of photos will be received at the Thrift Shop from Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All photos should be 5x7 or larger and appropriately mounted.

•The Thrift Shop is accepting any new and used men’s women’s and children’s clothing and accessories and housewares.
