When news of the cesspool collapse hit the special airwaves, Gavin Ryan, a 17-year old senior at Roslyn High School was sitting in class, observing his lessons. But Gavin isn’t your average high school student. He is also the youngest Class A member of Roslyn Rescue. Gavin, too, heard the 911 call. And so off he went, away from the classroom and to the scene of the accident.
Volunteer firemen from both of the Roslyn fire companies were among the first on the scene as they helped to rescue a Brentwood man who had fallen into an 18-foot hole at a residential construction site in East Hills.
Four years ago, Thomas R. Suozzi was re-elected county executive by a comfortable 21-point margin over his Republican Party challenger, Gregory Peterson. With election results of the 2009 race now official, Edward I. Mangano, a Republican from Bethpage, is the new county executive. According to the Nassau County Board of Elections, the final total gave Mangano a 122,490 to 122,104 margin over Suozzi.
As reported in last week’s issue of The Roslyn News, the Roslyn School District personnel, including Superintendent Dr. Dan Brenner, held a public meeting to discuss possible changes in the bus pickup schedule for grade school, middle school, and high school students.
At press time on Tuesday, Dec. 1, Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi conceded his bid for reelection to Republican challenger Edward I. Mangano, following unofficial results showing Mangano with a 377 vote lead. As well, Nassau County Comptroller Howard Weitzman conceded victory to his Republican challenger George Maragos. In another race, County Legislator David Mejias conceded to his Republican challenger, Joseph Belesi in the race for the 14th Legislative District. A detailed story will be published in this newspaper next week.
As noted in last week’s issue of The Roslyn News, an online survey conducted by the Roslyn School District, one that will help to determine if the start times at Roslyn schools will change, has generated parental concern.
And so, the district hosted a special forum about start times last Monday, one that took place at the Roslyn High School auditorium. Local residents were given the opportunity to receive additional background information and to voice their opinions about the issue.
The Roslyn Heights Funeral Home sponsored a Veterans Day tribute ceremony on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at the Rescue Hook and Ladder Co., No. 1. Along with the veterans who attended many civic leaders including Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman, Councilman Dwyer, Legislator Wayne Wink and Village of Roslyn Harbor Trustee Louis Badalato also turned out to pay homage to all who served. Benediction and prayers for all those who have put on the uniform of service were given by Rabbi Yaakov Reiter (Chabad Lubavitch of Roslyn), Rev. Margaret Clark (Trinity Episcopal Church, Father Evan Evangelidis (Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church), and Msgr. Richard Bauhoff (formerly of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Roslyn).
The Highlands Fire Department provided aerial support for the Stars and Stripes to be hung across Mineola Avenue in honor of all who served.
A study of adolescent sleep patterns and the resulting academic performance has led the Roslyn School District to conduct an online survey, one that will help to determine if the start times at Roslyn schools will change.
In recent issues of The Roslyn News, the school district has advertised the survey, explaining the possible changes in policy and four different scenarios for pickup times for students who take the bus to school.
On last Saturday, Nov. 14, Homicide Squad Detectives from the Nassau County police department reported the arrest of Wilmer Linares of Albertson, on Friday, Nov. 13 in connection with the homicide of Jony Acosta, also of Albertson.
The defendant is charged with Murder Second Degree and was arraigned on Saturday, Nov. 14 in First District Court, Hempstead.
After years of being dormant, the Roslyn Chamber of Commerce is back in business.
Recently, up to 30 people representing various Roslyn businesses, convened in Village Hall for the initial meeting of the new Roslyn Chamber of Commerce meeting.
