The Albertson Hook and Ladder, Engine and Hose Company #1 is proud of one of its members, firefighter Alphonse Marchica of Albertson who was recently awarded the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout by the Boy Scouts of America, the highest rank in Scouting.
Alphonse earned the Eagle Scout medal while a member of Troop #116 in Valley Stream. He held several leadership positions in the troop, including assistant senior patrol leader and troop instructor. Alphonse earned 21 merit badges along the way and was inducted into the Order of the Arrow in 2006.
Alphonse chose an Eagle Scout project close to his heart. As he was on vacation with his family in Saint Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Al noticed many people standing in a food line at a Salvation Army facility. He was curious and inquired as to why all the people were there and learned that they had lost their homes and possessions in a recent hurricane. Alphonse wanted to help in some way.
Upon arriving back home, he staged several food drives and sold small American flag key chains to raise money for postage, organizing his troop, family and friends to send over 700 pounds of food to the St. Thomas Salvation Army food bank.
Alfonse is a gradate of Herricks High School and active in his church and community. He is a great inspiration to his younger brother.
Several officers of the Albertson Fire Company attended Alphonse’s Eagle Scout Court of Honor on May 9 and presented him with an achievement award. The men and women of the Albertson Fire Company salute Eagle Scout Alphonse Marchica.
