Pope Francis is the first pontiff in history to be a native of Argentina. On Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m., Shelter Rock Jewish Center in Roslyn will host a talk by a rabbi who has co-authored a book with Pope Francis before the latter became world famous figure.
Rabbi Skorka is rector of Seminario Rabinico Latinamerica in Buenos Aires. In 2010, Rabbi Skorka and then-Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio co-authored Sobre el cielo y la tierra, which following the Cardinal’s election to the papacy in 2013, was published in English as On Heaven and Earth. The book essentially is a conversation between the two men on various subjects, including faith, family, history and interfaith relations. Published by Random House, it has received a warm reception in the United States.
“This remarkable book wonderfully demonstrates the positive relationship Pope Francis has developed with Jews and Judaism,” said Rabbi Eric J. Greenberg, director, Department of Interfaith Affairs Anti-Defamation League. “These honest and respectful exchanges between then-Cardinal Bergoglio and Argentinian Rabbi Abraham Skorka on a wide range of sensitive and complex topics - God, religion, fundamentalism, politics, and the Holocaust - is a model not only for Jews and Catholics but for all those seeking productive interfaith dialogue in helping to repair a broken world.”
On November 6, Rabbi Skorka will discuss both the book and his friendship with Pope Francis. He will also share his ideas of what a constructive dialogue of the religiously faithful might bring to the moral state of the world. In addition,
Rabbi Skorka will address his thoughts on current Catholic-Jewish relations.
Admission to this vital talk is free, but reservations are required. RSVP at 5-16-741-4305.
Four days after Rabbi Skorka’s talk, Shelter Rock will host a talk by another author. On Sunday, Nov. 10 at 9:30 a.m., The Adult Family Education Institute of Shelter Rock Jewish Center and the local B’nai Birth Chapter will co-sponsor a lecture by Alexander Kaufman to discuss his latest book The Precipice Option.
For reservations, call 516-741-4305, ext. 10.
Shelter Rock Jewish Center is located at 272 Shelter Rock Rd., Roslyn.
