Ruth J. Hinrichs, of Roslyn Estates, died on July 28, 2009. She was born in Brooklyn on Feb. 14, 1926. She was the daughter of the late Bessie and Louis Rohland, a former mayor of Roslyn Estates.
Ruth graduated from Cornell University in 1948 with a major in philosophy and government. She received a master’s degree from Teachers College, Columbia University, in New York City.
Ruth was the former wife of Eric Sloane (Everard Hinrichs) the artist. Together they founded the Bell Ringing custom on the Fourth of July. She was a former coordinator for Meals on Wheels and for many years was active in the local Interfaith Group. She was historian for the Village of Roslyn Estates and a member of the vestry of Trinity Episcopal Church.
She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Hanson of Hilton Head Island, SC. Other survivors include three nieces, one nephew, one grand-niece, two grand-nephews and three step-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8 in Trinity Episcopal Church, 1579 Northern Blvd., Roslyn. Donations in her memory may be made payable to the Trinity Church Restoration Fund.
