I’m a Roslyn parent and a subscriber and I particularly appreciated your recent editorial comparing the Common Core to snake oil. I was wondering if you were aware that just over the weekend, the New York State Education Department cancelled all the scheduled public Common Core forums that were to be held throughout the state. The next one was supposed to be held at Garden City High School.
Apparently, the parents at the first forum upstate asked too many difficult questions and were not adequately appreciative of Commissioner John B. King’s obtuse, vague and condescending answers. These were to be the only opportunity for parents and teachers to be heard publicly on this issue and I think canceling them is a travesty. How can anyone support the Common Core if the commissioner himself is afraid to stand up in public and defend it? This kind of suppression of public debate really must be confronted.
In any case, I appreciate your coverage and I hope you will give some attention to this new development.
