The Roslyn Rotary Club honored Elizabeth Siskind as the May Student of the Month at its luncheon. Elizabeth’s community service included volunteering at Sportime of Roslyn as a tennis instructor for autistic children; volunteering at Growing Tree North observing and monitoring children’s play habits, keeping records on children and sanitizing toys and play equipment; and orchestrating and participating in a Key Club fundraiser for Autism Speaks. She has also participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life as a student chair for Liminaria, Student Chair of Registration and Student Co-Chair overseeing all student committees, ensuring the event runs smoothly, publicizing and fundraising, and planning meetings.
Roslyn High School senior Joshua Landman has received the National Merit Washington University scholarship. Washington University is located in St. Louis, Mo. Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among the finalists in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship program who plan to attend their institution. These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.
The Roslyn Rotary Club honored Ivy Lam as their April Student of the Month at their luncheon on April 25.
In the countywide May 21 elections, three Roslyn school board seats were up for election. Two were for regular three-year terms, while the other was held to fill the vacancy left by longtime board member Dani Kline.
Bruce Valauri and Steven Litvack, the top two vote-getters, were re-elected to those three-year terms, while newcomer David Dubner was elected to fill Kline’s unexpired term. Valauri received 602 votes, while Litvack had 596 tallies, finishing slightly ahead of Dubner, who received 589 votes in his first campaign for the school board.
More than 200 Buckley community members and friends gathered at the Garden City Hotel late last month to celebrate Buckley’s 90th anniversary. Gala chairs and the gala committee along with the director of development and alumni relations, assistant director of development for parents’ association and special events, and development assistant attended to every detail of this star-studded red-and-blue event and are to be credited for making this a wonderful evening.
