Early last month, 12 North Shore wrestlers earned Division 1 “All Conference” honors after placing in the Freeport County Qualifying Tournament.
In addition to earning All Conference, these wrestlers earned the golden ticket to advance to the county tournament at Hofstra. Freshman Giorgo Recne was not intimidated by larger and older wrestlers and brought his football skills to the tournament, finishing with a pin for third place. Sophomore Hunter Sharf had a barn burner of a semi-final getting pinned while ahead of the number two seeded wrestler 8-4. He fought back hard for 4th place and earned his second trip to the counties. Senior John Jacome finally made his way to the counties after four years on the varsity squad.
Junior Dan Grabher took first place after demolishing his weight class with three pins and a technical fall (win by more than 15 points) in the finals. This was his third tournament championship this year. He advances to the counties with a 35 and two record. The win earned him his fifth All Conference title, a North Shore record. He returns to the counties for the fourth time.
The list of All Conference wrestlers includes: freshmen Keith Ford and Tristan Vitale; sophomores Mark Eschan and Nick Park; and juniors Tony Palmari and Will Blackburn. Seniors Jake Alverson and Mike Mendolsohn both gained there second “All Conference” nod.
