Fresh off a successful summer camp, the Roslyn High School Bulldogs are looking forward to the 2009 season.
Last year’s season was highlighted by a big win over Jericho in the first “Friday Night Lights” game ever played at the renovated football field.
The 2009 season begins tomorrow night when the Bulldogs play a road game against Mepham. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
The 2009 schedule is as follows:
Thursday, Sept. 12: Elmont, 4:30 p.m., home game.
Saturday, Sept. 26: at Valley Stream Central, 1:30 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 3: Jericho, 1 p.m., home game.
Friday, Oct. 9: at MacArthur, 7 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 17: New Hyde Park, 1:30 p.m., home game.
Saturday, Oct. 24: Great Neck South, 1:30 p.m., Homecoming game.
Saturday, Oct. 31: at Long Beach, 1:30 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 11: Playoff game, 3 p.m. To be determined.
Head Coach Joe Dispigno, back for the sixth season at the helm, gave his assessment of the squad to The Roslyn News:
“The team looks pretty good this year,” he said. “For the first time we have size, speed and athletic ability. If we can avoid injuries, we should make a strong push for the playoffs. We are hungry to get back to the playoffs. Our best players would be the following: Samson Magid, senior fullback and middle linebacker, team captain and returning All-Conference, a punishing hitter and tough runner; Damian Douglin, junior defensive lineman, unstoppable, legit Division 1 potential; and Gabriel Mabatah, sophomore transfer from Texas, runningback and cornerback, a fast and elusive runner.”
In addition to Magid, team captains for this year’s squad are Christopher Decarolis, the senior quarterback who was selected to succeed last year’s All-Conference quarterback Jon Combs; and Brandon Bermen, the 270-lb. senior who is a bulwark on both the offensive and defensive lines.
Last year, Magid was the team leader in no less than four categories: rushing yards (356), receptions (tied with Erwin Zavala with 7), touchdowns (7), and tackles (41). Magid, as noted, joined Combs on the All-Conference squad.
Jon Combs was the leader in passing yards with 289. Erwin Zavala was the leader in receiving yards with 121, and Alex Labib paced the Bulldogs with five sacks.
