Work off your holiday feast while doing some good for the environment. Help clear the trails at Underhill Preserve in Jericho in time for the Christmas Bird Count in December. Tools, gloves and snacks will be provided for the volunteers. This is a great chance to explore this preserve which is closed to the public. Due to the sensitive location, the group will meet in front of the Starbucks in the Whole Foods shopping center in Jericho on Route 107 then carpool to the preserve. A 5-kilometer cross country race which will be held at Stillwell Woods Park in Syosset. Rob’s Run will start at 9:15 a.m. Registration and pickup will be at the Center for Developmental Disabilities (72 South Woods Road, directly next door to Stillwell Woods) from 7:15 a.m. to 8:45 a.m.
A community-wide celebration to be held at the parking lot of Whole Foods in Jericho featuring a magic and fire juggling show and a musical presentation by the Chabad school. There will be plenty of latkes and doughnuts and Chanukah treats, and music and dancing. Dignitaries will be in attendance as well. 4 p.m.

Tapestry art work by Sherry Schreiber will be exhibited in the library’s art gallery through Dec. 28. Reception: Dec. 14, 2-4 p.m.; open to the public. Tapestry weaving is like translating from one language to another. In order to make this transition from her source of inspiration, a pastel drawing is executed first. A synthesis occurs during this preliminary step. Then the outlines are rendered onto graph paper. The entire piece is not visible all at once, as the woven part rolled onto weft beam of the loom. “One could say that my tapestries are paintings done in yarn, though I believe that they are experienced in a more alive and luminous form than painting,” says Schreiber.

Eight students from Jericho High School, the largest number of students from any school on Long Island this year, are among the 300 semifinalists picked from 1,800 entrants nationally and overseas in the annual Intel Science Talent Search.

Brookville’s Green Vale School students were featured in the September/October 2013 issue of Sport Rocketry, the official journal of the National Association of Rocketry.
The seventh-grade students competed nationally at the Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC) last May in Virginia and were the youngest rocket scientists competing. They were also the only team from Long Island that qualified to enter the competition and one of only two teams from New York State.

The Farrell & Schmidt Ho Ho Ho 5-Kilometer Run started and finished at the John F. Kennedy Middle School in Bethpage on Dec. 21. The top local finisher was Tim Mahony of Syosset, who scored in 11th place overall and third in the 15 to 19 age group.
Other locals winning awards in this year’s Ho Ho Ho Run were Gina Ferraro of Syosset (2nd woman, 35-39 age group), Patty Santella of Syosset (3rd woman, 45-49 age group), Kim Solomine of Syosset (2nd woman, 55-59 age group).
