LETTER
Blood Drive Was Not in Vein

The Jericho Community Blood Drive was held on Monday, Nov. 3, from 3 to 8:30 p.m. at George Jackson Elementary School. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who contributed to its success.

First, thank you to the organizations who fund the Blood Drive: Birchwood Civic Association, Oakwood Princeton Park Civic Association, West Birchwood Civic Association, West Jericho Civic Association, White Birch/Old Jericho Civic Association, and the PTAs of Cantiague School, George Jackson School and Robert Seaman School. Thanks for your contributions and for helping to spread the word about the blood drive.

Second, I am very grateful to the Jericho School District for its yearly support of this community event. I especially want to thank Mr. Grishman, Mrs. Tumminio, Mrs. Mills and their staffs for all of their help. The custodial staff at Jackson went out of their way to help on the day of the blood drive and it is truly appreciated. Many thanks to Jericho High School students who helped by baby-sitting on the evening of the drive: Jill Wurzel, John Hemmerich, Adam Firmann, Lori Steinbach, Michele Mahl, Jason Meyers, Allison Press, Ian Krochek, and Robert Blumenfeld. Special thanks to Jill and Michele for coordinating the student effort.

Third, I am very grateful to The Bakery at Milleridge Inn for donating delicious baked goods. They were very much appreciated and truly enjoyed. Thanks also to Precise Quality Printing for discounted printing costs. Delicious heroes were enjoyed by all thanks to the Deli at Waldbaums and its discount.

Fourth, I'm indebted to Ann Alutto, Cathy Kahn, and Frank Sammartano for helping at the registration table the evening of the blood drive. Cathy also assisted with publicity beforehand. Thank you one and all; I couldn't do this without you!

Fifth, a big thank you to the Jericho Fire Department for publicizing the event on the large sign in front of the building. This was a great help in spreading the word.

Last but certainly not least, I want to extend my most sincere thanks to all those who came to donate a pint of blood. Sixty-eight units of blood were collected. Since one pint of blood can be separated into four or five blood products, this can help up to 340 people. It takes a special kind of person to take time out of their busy lives to help others they don't even know. Thanks again to everyone who contributed to the success of the Jericho Community Blood Drive, especially our wonderful donors! Happy and healthy holidays to all; I hope to see you next year, and bring a friend!

LETTER
Jericho Fire Department Thanks Community

The Board of Fire Commissioners, chiefs officers and members of the Jericho Fire Department wish to thank our community for their overwhelming response to our annual Fire Prevention Day open house which was held on Sunday, Oct. 5. Approximately 1,500 children and adults visited Jericho Fire Department Headquarters throughout the day to learn about fire prevention and fire safety.

A number of activities and demonstrations took place, including a kitchen safety and fire extinguisher demonstration, a fire safety "smoke room," actual live firefighting demonstrations and rides on fire engines. In addition, an air rescue helicopter from the Nassau County Police Department's Aviation Bureau, the Nassau County Fire Marshal's decontamination trailer, as well as hazardous materials incident response units, were on display. One of the highlights of the day was a bomb sniffing demonstration by Rudi, a Nassau County Police Department K9 dog. Entertainment was provided by Sparky, the nine-foot-tall fire dog and Zippy the clown.

Through the efforts of the Jericho Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the Nassau County Police Department's Public Information Office, several hundred children were provided with free identification cards. A children's bicycle raffle raised $559 for the benefit of the Nassau County Burn Center.

The Jericho Fire Department's Fire Prevention/Public Education Committee would like to extend a special thanks to the following agencies and businesses for their support and participation in Fire Prevention Day: Nassau County Police Department's Aviation Bureau, Canine Division, Public Information Office and 2nd Precinct; Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office, Town of Oyster Bay Department of Parks and Highway Division, Action Auto Wreckers, Bill's Towing, Chesler Plywood Corp., Fairhaven Garden Center, Herr's Super Deli, Jericho Cider Mill, Lowitt Alarms, Pepsi Cola, The Home Depot, and Waldbaums.
