Lumber in No Slumber, Shutting Out Lifetime Hoan

City Lumber (Purple) defeated Lifetime Hoan (Red) this past week in a very physical game which was partially the result of the tough weather conditions. The game, which was the last game of the season for both teams, was played despite severe cold and a very strong wind, which are the toughest conditions for soccer.

City Lumber was going against the wind in the first half and their strategy was to try and stay close until the first half ended. Seth Bergman, the City Lumber goalie, played a spectacular half as he continuously thwarted anything that Lifetime Hoan shot his way. The City Lumber defense, which was under constant attack because of the strong wind, also played an amazing half led by Michael Sinn, Angelo Fuschetto, Darrin Sachs, Matthew Schlau, Jonathan Cantor, Douglas Wolf and the strong midfield play of Varun Kathait, Alex Flaks and Jason Gold. Dustin Shorr, Elias Tacher and Omar Hurlok helped out in the defensive end from their offensive positions. The tremendous efforts by the entire City Lumber team enabled it to enjoy a scoreless first half with the knowledge that in the second half they would have the wind's advantage.

The second half began with City Lumber making a strategic move by moving Sinn up to a forward position, joining Shorr and Tacher on the front line. This move paid swift dividends as Tacher took a pass from Short and broke the ice with a spectacular shot to take the lead 1-0. Taking full advantage of the wind, Gold then made a pass to Shorr who dribbled around half of the Red team and culminated this rush with a perfect pass to Tacher, who then scored again to give City Lumber a 2-0 lead. Tacher sure has a nose for putting the ball into the net.

By scoring 2 goals within three minutes Lifetime Hoan tried getting back into the game by moving Evan Blinder and Jason Levine to the offensive end. While successful in getting some shots on goal, Bergman kept making save after save, frustrating Lifetime Hoan. After one of Bergman's booming kicks to start the attack, Shorr took possession and streaked down the right side, drawing the defense towards him. He then passed to Sinn, who was able to convert the pass with a great shot to score the third unanswered goal for City Lumber. That proved to be the final goal of the game as Bergman with the help of the entire City Lumber team recorded another shutout, 3-0.
