The Nassau County Police Department has released the following shopping tips for all County residents as they shop this holiday season:
Never display or carry large amounts of cash.
Carry only the credit cards you think you will use.
Carry only a few blank checks, not your entire checkbook. Be sure to note the numbers so that you can notify the bank to stop payment immediately if theft or loss occurs.
Avoid tipping off a thief. Never discuss your purchases with a stranger or with companions in the presence of strangers.
Shop with friends or family, rather than alone.
If you think you are being followed, alert the manager or security guard at the nearest store.
For women, select a bag that can be carried just under your arm, and hold it close to your body with the flap facing towards you.
Transfer the risk and carry your credit cards and money in your pocket instead of your purse.
For men, carrying a wallet in a front pants pocket, instead of a jacket or hip pocket, will help to prevent pickpocketing. Placing a rubber band around your wallet makes it more difficult to remove from your pocket.
After making a purchase, always put your wallet away before leaving the register.
When examining items for purchase or trying on clothes, never leave packages or your pocketbook out of sight or reach.
Avoid wearing jewelry, especially hanging chains, when shopping.
After dark, park your car in a well-lit area and as close to your destination as possible.
Lock all packages in the car trunk, rather than leaving them on the seat. Check between the surrounding cars to be sure no one is watching.
Don't forget the obvious-turn off your ignition, lock the doors and take your keys with you, even when shopping only momentarily.
When returning to your car, have your car door key ready. As you approach your car, check between the surrounding cars to be sure no one is lurking. If there is, turn around and go back to the store.
Always look inside your car before getting in. Once inside lock all car doors.
If you witness a crime, note the descriptions of all those involved. Write down license plate numbers, types and colors of cars involved. Notify the police immediately by calling 911.
Ff confronted by a thief, do not resist. Your money or valuable are not as valuable as your life or an injury.
