The Birchwood Civic Association honored two local fire departments this month for its volunteers' brave and selfless efforts to ensure the safety of the community, through both actual rescues and prevention programs.

"We are here to take it upon ourselves to honor a group of men who have done a tremendous amount for our community," stated Birchwood President Richard Staller, who presented $1,000 checks to the Syosset and Jericho Fire Departments.
Syosset First Assistant Chief Nick Favata responded, "We appreciate the residents' support. That's what we're all here for."
Chairman of the Jericho Fire Prevention Bureau Wayne Friedrich echoed those sentiments, saying, "It is our goal to provide our community with the best fire prevention safety we can offer."

Birchwood will seek to improve pedestrian safety at Robbins Lane Elementary School by requesting jointly to the Syosset School Board of Education to remove signs that forbid drivers from stopping in front of the school to drop their children off. Under the current situation, students transported to the school by car must be dropped off on the other side of the road, and cross the busy street. Residents also would like measures to slow traffic down, such as a horizontal speed limit sign painted on the road itself and another traffic light.
