On Saturday, Feb. 7 the Jericho High School fencing team competed in the Nassau County Championships. After finishing the year in third place with a record of 6-4, the Jayhawks knew that they were facing an uphill battle.

Jericho started off very strong with 5-1 victories against Wheatley, Oyster Bay and Hewlett. Jericho then lost 1-5 to Garden City, but bounced back to beat Great Neck 4-2. Jericho finished in third place with a total of 21 points to Great Neck's 22 and County Champs Garden City's 27. The team scores were as follows:

Jordan Zolan 2-3

Ian Serotkin 3-2

Jason Ulman 3-2

Jeff Godoy 5-0

David Jeon 3-2

Craig Cepler 4-1

In individual competition, Jericho fared extremely well. Shoan Wang finished third in Girls Junior Varsity Epee, Steven Lee placed second in Boys Junior Varsity Foil, and Roberto Paniccia was the champion of Boys Junior Varsity Epee. Jordan Zolan and Ian Serotkin were both given All-League honors, and Serotkin was also chosen to receive the Fencer Award for 1998. The winner of this award is voted on by all of the fencers, who select the person they feel best symbolizes the dedication, tenacity, hard work and sportsmanship that goes into their sport.

The Jayhawks fencing team and its coach, Doug Meiners, should be satisfied with their successful season.
