In their first game of their first season, the Jericho Tornados put their best foot forward by recently beating the Albertson Asteroids 3-1 in terrible weather conditions.
The Tornados suffered a rough start when they were called for a hand ball, which led to a penalty kick within the first three minutes of play. But Justin Saks made a big save to keep Jericho from falling behind early.
Both teams experienced difficulty playing through the high winds, but Albertson seemed to fare better in the first half, making 5 shots on goal. The Tornados, ironically, had trouble advancing the ball against the strong gusts of wind, but solid team defense by Evan Gettinger, Greg Rosenberg, Matthew Chamish, Matthew Kirchblum and Adam Goebel helped fend off the Asteroids' attack. One shot did get through, however, to give Albertson the 1-0 lead.
The second half brought with it new life for the Tornados, as the wind was now at their backs, aiding the offense. Roy Tuccillo and Sohill Patel started an attack to the left side, but Albertson wouldn't gave any room to work. Jericho, reacting, reversed the ball, from Ian Greenberg to Elias Tacher. Tacher raced to the corner, beat his man and centered the ball to Josh Friedman, who charged the net and scored Jericho's first goal to tie the game at 1 apiece.
Scott Drattel and Tacher began yet another attack. Tacher booted a strong crossing kick to Trevor Goodman, who scored Jericho's second goal and put his team in the lead, 2-1.
With less than 5 minutes to play, Greenberg put the game out of reach with a powerful shot off of another pass by Tacher, who assisted on all three goals.
In addition to a regular season game, this was also a Waldbaum's Challenge game. The Tornados, with the win, advanced to the tournament's round of 16. They will host the winner of the game between the Port Washington Pirates and the Bayport Jaws on April 4.
