On Halloween, the Syosset Boys Varsity Cross Country team continued on their path to defending their county title by winning the conference meet, 27-87. In cross-country the team with the lowest score wins. The five top finishers of seven from Syosset ran 1, 5, 6, 7 and 8. Coach Bart Sessa always urges the team to "beat the field," and the boys definitely did that last Saturday.
The members of the Varsity Ten are seniors Jeremy Bellois, Rich Cafiero, Dave Fusco, Kenny Weinberg and Jun Isoda, juniors Garrick Huie and Dan Abramowitz, and sophomores James Duade, Sean Duade and Billy Vasillyadas. Senior Co-Captains Bellois, Cafiero and Jon Tan have led the team to an undefeated 17-0 league record. "The team is currently ranked third in the state, and are on the verge of a state ranking," said Cafiero.
The team's success has been a total team effort, commented Bellois, adding, "The hard workouts, running some mornings on top of the afternoon workouts have helped us achieve success."
One team member, senior Andrew Tchabovsky, summed up the season thus far. "The hard work that we put in this summer and throughout this season has helped us reach our full potential and begin to achieve our goal of defending our county title. We hope to continue this success into the winter and spring seasons."
In order to make it to the state meet at Lake Placid on Nov. 14, the team must win counties. The boys are eagerly awaiting the challenge. Bellois urges people to "come and support local sports." The race has a start time of 1 p.m.
