Preserving or improving the beauty of our neighborhood is a topic that comes up for discussion at just about every meeting of the BCA. Over the last several years, we have worked hard to improve the entrances to our neighborhood, replacing signs and adding new landscaping. At our last meeting, the subject of the trees lining our streets was brought up by a community resident.
As our neighborhood matures, the large trees provide a beautiful canopy over the streets. Unfortunately, in some cases, the growing roots are lifting and cracking sidewalks or interfering with the sewage system. As a result, many residents have opted to remove the trees. In the interest of the neighborhood preservation, the BCA encourages residents to explore the possibility of repairing the sidewalk around the tree. Many residents have had success cutting back roots and repairing the sidewalk while preserving trees. Of course, an expert should be consulted to ensure that the remaining roots are sufficient to anchor the tree securely.
If it does become necessary to remove a tree, residents should be aware that the Town of Oyster Bay will replace it. In fact, each house is entitled to three curbside trees planted by the town. If you do not have three trees, call the town at 677-5812 to request a tree application. The application is very short. Your tree(s) will be planted approximately six months after you submit the application.
Preserving our older trees and planting new ones are two small steps that will make a big difference in maintaining the beauty of our East Birchwood community.
There are currently four openings on the Birchwood Civic Association Board of Directors. The BCA is an active civic group, participating in a wide range of community issues and events. Residents interested in joining the board should attend the monthly BCA meetings. The nominating committee will recommend interested BCA members for the open positions, which will then be voted on by the current board. Open meetings are held in the Jackson School Faculty room at 8:15 p.m., one Tuesday each month. Upcoming meetings are scheduled for Jan. 19 and Feb. 23, 1999. Additional information is available on the BCA's voice mail at 733-0063.
