The Syosset Central School District Girls basketball program recently hosted a clinic run by Athletes for Tomorrow's Athletes (AFTA) and presided over by Rita Haywood, a coach at Long Island Tech and also a trainer for many WNBA teams. Haywood was joined by special guest Sophia Witherspoon, a member of WNBA team, the New York Liberty. The duo, along with former high school and college players, taught the Lady Braves new techniques to help improve their current skills.

During the first hour, the middle school girls, the two JV teams and the varsity team participated in stations where they worked on ball control, shooting, defense and boxing out. Then in the second hour, Varsity members were left alone with the clinicians. The girls learned new drills which will increase the speed and ball control of the team. In fact, some of these drills have become part of the team's daily practice.

Varsity head Coach Diane Alleva commented, "We were able to offer the girls in the Syosset basketball program an opportunity to improve their skills and knowledge of the game."

Witherspoon said, "It was great to work with such a great group of enthusiastic and talented young ladies."
