A 17-year-old driver from Syosset accidently struck and killed another Syosset resident who was 60 years his senior, as she crossed the street on Thursday, July 8.

A police report states that 77-year-old Antoinette Cangelosi was crossing at the intersection of South Oyster Bay Road and Garden Street in Syosset when she was hit at approximately 1 p.m. by a 1998 Isuzu driven by Robert Mannino.

According to Detective James Bennett, Cangelosi had been food shopping at nearby Shop Rite, and was walking back to her house with groceries. Mannino, unaware of any pedestrian, struck her when he turned left onto South Oyster Bay Road from Garden Street.

Cangelosi had followed all the proper pedestrian procedures. "She was in a crosswalk, with a green ["walk"] light," said Bennett. "He just didn't see her."

Though the impact of the hit was not great, it was forceful enough to knock Cangelosi to the pavement, rendering her unconscious. "The kid was going very slow, but she went down hard," said Bennett.

Cangelosi was transported via Nassau County Police Helicopter to Nassau County Medical Center in East Meadow, where she was admitted in critical, but stable condition. She died later that day.

Though the intersection does not have a history of accidents, Bennett said that it has that potential because "that's a high-speed road there, where you have a lot of elderly."

No charges were filed against Mannino. "There's no criminality here, no intention or reckless act. It's an accident," Bennett stated. The detective characterized Mannino after the accident as "very upset."

Said Bennett, "The poor kid's going to have to think about it for the rest of his life."
