I recently received a letter from the director of water conservation for the Jericho Water District, advising me that I had been observed watering my lawn on an even-numbered day. She stated that according to my address, I should be watering my lawn only on odd-numbered days.
I promptly called and informed her that the Cornell Cooperative Extension water conservation program had performed a thorough evaluation and survey of my property last year to determine irrigation needs. As a result of this survey and in the interest of water conservation and maximum effectiveness, it was determined that the major portions of my lawn should be watered every third day.
I explained that I would be using more water if I followed their even-odd schedule. She understood and agreed, but stated that I should follow these rules anyway.
With water conservationists like this employee of the district, we really need to pray for rain.
