The Lightpath Long Island Classic, New York's only Senior PGA Tour event, announced a $300,000 increase in its 2000 purse, raising the total to $1,500,000.
Lightpath, the commercial telephone service of Cablevision Systems Corp., is the title sponsor of the event, which is operated by The Northville Foundation. The tournament will take place July 24 - 30 at the Meadow Brook Club in Jericho.
"We are thrilled to be able to increase our purse to $1,500,000, which will give the winner of the Lightpath Long Island Classic $225,000," stated General Chairman Gene Bernstein. "This places us in the top 10 of the 39 Senior PGA Tour events and helps to attract a stellar field."
More than just a regional sports event, the Lightpath Long Island Classic is also an important charitable effort, supporting the critical medical work of Schneider Children's Hospital (New Hyde Park). Last year, the tournament raised a record $325,000 for the hospital bringing a contribution of over $1,757,000 in the past 11 years.
Cablevision president and CEO James Dolan said, "We are pleased to return as sponsor of the Lightpath Long Island Classic. Cablevision has a long history as a supporter of the Long Island community, and this event enables us to welcome the world's premier senior golfers while making an important contribution to the Schneider Children's Hospital and the region's economy."
Now in its 14th year, the Lightpath Long Island Classic's field has featured some of the world's marquee players and the 2000 tournament is targeted to attract an even greater number. Past champions have included Gary Player (1987, '98), George Archer (1990, '91, '92), Raymond Floyd (1993), Lee Trevino (1994, '95), Dana Quigley (1997), and 1999 Player and Rookie of the Year Bruce Fleisher.
